CHAPTER TWELVE

(Sam)

Well, he jumped right on that, didn’t he?

I folded my arms. “I don’t really see how any of that would be worth mentioning.” Maybe it was an insensitive thing to say, but I’d never claimed to be anything else. “I know what you’re thinking and, yes, I am a bitch.”

A smile touched his eyes. “That wasn’t what I was thinking.”

Whatever. “Daphne swears she didn’t kill Lambert. Cheyenne claims she didn’t do it either. He had no enemies residing at The Hollow who’d bother to execute him.”

Ansel pushed away from the wall and stalked toward the glass. “So I must be the guilty party then, huh?”

“Are you?”

“If I wanted him dead, I wouldn’t have killed him on a tiny island from where I’d have zero chance of escape. But I’ll bet Jared wants it to be me. It’ll give him an excuse to kill me.”

I felt my brows draw together. “I’m honestly unsure where you got the weird idea that he’d feel he needed an excuse. He’d do it purely because it pleased him, if that was what he wanted.”

“Then why hasn’t he?”

“Why would he? You’re not a threat to my Bond with him. Plus, according to you, you didn’t come here to cause problems. You just wanted to meet me. Which seems unnecessary, if you ask me. There are plenty of recordings of me on V-Tube that you could have watched to get a sense of who I am.”

“You were wearing your ruler hat on those videos. I wanted to meet Sam. I wanted to know what it is about you that would’ve made me Bind myself to you if things had been different.” He paused. “And maybe I also wanted to find reasons to dislike you. It would’ve made it easier to let go of everything I felt for you in that vision.”

“Hmm.”

His head flicked slightly to the side. “What?”

“I’m just thinking you didn’t actually make an effort to talk to me and get to know me. You came all this way yet didn’t bother.”

His eyes dulled. “I didn’t anticipate how hard it would be.”

“What?”

“Having you look at me and see nothing but a stranger. It made it hard to talk to you. Lambert didn’t want me to anyway. And no, I didn’t therefore kill him.”

“You weren’t even a little pissed at him for confining you to your room for nights on end?”

“It wasn’t like he wanted to do that, or that he had a choice. The only person I’m pissed at is Daphne. She wasn’t supposed to say anything about the vision.” Whatever he saw on my face made his eyes narrow. “You don’t believe me? You think I wanted her to share the vision?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know you, so I can’t say. But in your shoes, I’d have wanted to at least see your reaction to the vision. I might have even done it to be spiteful and cause a little rift between you and your partner. But I’m selfish and vicious that way. You should write those traits down on your list of reasons to dislike me.
